Penang set to be Age-Friendly City by Dec 2025
GEORGE TOWN: Penang is well on its way to becoming an Age-Friendly City by December next year.
At present, preparations are in full gear to fulfil the eight frameworks outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to become an Age-Friendly City.
Malaysian Healthy Ageing Society (MHAS) president Professor Dr Shahrul Bahyah Kamaruzzaman said the society acted as a consultant to the Penang government to ensure the success of the Age-Friendly City project.

Clinical Talk at Penang Adventist Hospital
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Prem Kumar Chandrasekaran, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist and also working group member for Age Friendly City (AFC) initiative in Penang.
Topic: “Ageing Healthily in Penang – the Age-friendly City Proposal”
The Clinical Talk in the Auditorium at Penang Adventist Hospital featured Prof. Dr. Prem Kumar Chandrasekaran, who provided valuable insights into “Ageing Initiatives for Penangites – showcasing what’s being done and what to look forward to when Penang Island is labelled as AFC”.
This engaging session was well-received by 30 healthcare professionals in attendance.

RUN TOMO for FRIENDLY COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN 2024
Run Tomo has been promoted since 2011 in Hokkaido, Japan.
In 2024, Run TOMO will be officially brought to Malaysia
We uphold the spirit of Run Tomo and call on friends with dementia.We also expand the group of people we care for, including the elderly, people with disabilities, etc. To participate in the walking activities, conveying the friendly concepts of friendship, neighborly companionship, acceptance, empathy, and dignified life.

MHAS Empowers Penang Stakeholders with Age-Friendly City, Capacity Building
MHAS provided training on Age-Friendly City, effective engagement strategies, and management of required outputs from stakeholders in Penang on 30th October 2023.
2nd Stakeholders Engagement Report 2023
The Stakeholders Engagement process, comprising two workshops conducted in January 2023 and December 2023, represents a pivotal step in advancing Age-Friendly City (AFC) initiatives in Penang Island.
The First Stakeholders Engagement (January 2023) aimed to convene stakeholders and initiate dialogue on initiatives under each of the eight WHO domains under the AFC framework. It yielded a policy brief that delineated the objectives and priorities of the AFC initiatives for Penang Island.
City Council of Penang Island Takes to TikTok to Promote Age-Friendly City Initiatives
The ‘Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pienang (MBPP)’, i.e.City Council of Penang Island has launched a TikTok video to promote AFC initiatives that have commenced mid-this year.

Zero Burden Bazaar Program
October 2023 edition of “Car Free Day” will feature a special event which is the “Zero Burden Bazaar” Program to be held on the following dates:
Date : October 8, 2023 (Sunday)
Time : 7.00 am – 11.00 am
Place : Car Free Day, Lebuh Pantai, George Town
A variety of “booths” for charitable sales will be present in addition to the aerobics event. Each purchase will go directly into the fund for the charity collection.
